A beautiful hike to the mountain top overlook of Wildcat Rock. This hike is out and back, totaling approximately 3.5 miles round trip. Start by parking at Florence Nature Preserve in Gerton, NC. This nature preserve offers access to numerous hikes, so it’s a great starting point for any day you want to spend hiking in the mountains. To access the Wildcat Rock Trail you need to cross the street after you park your car in the parking lot. There is a trail head with a marker denoting the start of Wildcat Rock Trail. The journey begins by taking you past a private orchard and garden, before leading you into the woods. After passing by mini waterfalls and a rushing river, the hike heads upwards to the mountain top. The entire hike is uphill, and it can become quite difficult at the end. Once you’re almost at the top, you’ll reach Little Bearwallow Falls, a waterfall flowing over rock faces. Then, massive steps begin taking you the rest of the way to the overlook. Once you reach the overlook, you’ll have views over looking Upper Hickory Nut Gorge, and all the surrounding mountain tops. Remember to bring lots of water and a snack to enjoy at the top!
